Okinawa Lantern Festival: A Radiant Journey
Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Yomitan on the island of Okinawa in Japan, the theme park “Murasaki Mura“‘” invites you on an enchanting journey through time during its famous “Ryukyu Lantern Festival“. This annual event, held from December 1st to March 31st, transforms the park into a magical spectacle of lights and colors, offering visitors a unique immersive experience.

A reconstructed village
Originally, “Murasaki Mura” was built as a filming set for the historical drama “琉球の風” (Ryukyu no Kaze).Afterward, the site was turned into a theme park that recreates the Ryukyu Kingdom’s architecture and atmosphere.
Today, it serves as a cultural center where visitors can try traditional crafts and explore Okinawa’s vibrant heritage.

The Magic of the Lantern Festival
During the festival, more than 3,000 lanterns light up the cobblestone paths, tiled-roof houses, and lush greenery of the park.
- First, these lanterns, inspired by Chinese and Vietnamese designs, create a romantic and mystical atmosphere throughout the grounds.
- Then, the scene feels like something out of a lavish Asian historical drama, rich in color and ambiance.
- Along the illuminated garden paths, visitors will also find washi paper figures of animals, flowers, and traditional characters.
- Finally, these delicate creations add an artistic and dreamlike touch to the entire experience.
Activities and Entertainment for Everyone
- Guests can also create their own lanterns during washi paper workshops, adding a personal touch to their experience.
- As night falls, projection mapping shows bring traditional stories to life with a modern twist.
- Finally, traditional games and outdoor entertainment round out the event, creating joyful moments for families and friends alike.

Culinary Experience
The festival regularly features dining spaces where visitors can enjoy regional specialties in a beautifully lit setting. Meanwhile, the “Lantern Café” offers warm, comforting meals served in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
Accommodation in the Heart of the Enchantment
To extend this magical experience, the Murasaki Mura Hotel is ideally located just a stone’s throw from the park. Hotel guests enjoy exclusive access to the festival, with the opportunity to stroll through the park early in the morning, before the crowds arrive. This proximity offers a unique chance to fully experience the festival’s atmosphere, both by day and by night.

A video overview of the Yomitan Lantern Festival
A video of the Yomitan Lantern Festival is available on my YouTube channel. It is a short sequence of about ten minutes, designed to provide a general overview of the atmosphere and the beauty of the site, without revealing everything. This video invites you to soak in the magic of the place while leaving room for personal discovery. The goal is not to show everything, but to suggest the unique atmosphere of the festival, to encourage you to explore it on your own, at your own pace.
Yokai Festival
If you enjoy evenings illuminated by the soft glow of paper lanterns, Murasaki Mura also hosts another special event: the Ryukyu Yokai Festival.
This event takes place every year during the summer and transforms the village into a mysterious and immersive world.
Yokai are creatures from Japanese folklore. They represent spirits, supernatural beings, or strange phenomena linked to nature, everyday objects, or popular legends. Some are mischievous, others protective or simply enigmatic, and they have held an important place in the Japanese imagination for centuries.
To learn more about this festival and its unique atmosphere, I have dedicated a full article to this event on the blog.
