On December 25, 2024, during a special event, the zoo welcomed visitors under perfect conditions. With a comfortable temperature of 23°C (73°F) and clear skies, it was an ideal day for a pleasant stroll. For the occasion, admission was set at 2,800 yen per adult—a price well worth it given the quality of the experience.

A Well-Organized Welcome and Smooth Experience

The zoo features multiple entrances, each providing access to different areas of the park. The southeast entrance, modern and well-lit, offers immediate access to a detailed map to help guide visitors. From there, the visit begins with a gentle descent along wooden bridges that lead to the various animal exhibits.

A Well-Maintained Park

From the very first moments, the care taken in maintaining the site is striking. The facilities are spotless, the enclosures are clean, and the animals look healthy and well cared for. Dedicated reptile areas allow visitors to observe alligators, snakes, and turtles in optimal conditions. Further along, the mammal enclosures are home to an Indian elephant, giraffes, and kangaroos.

Crystal-Clear Glass Panels for a Safe, Immersive Experience

One of the standout features of this zoo is the exceptional clarity of its viewing glass. Even on a busy day, the panels were spotless, allowing for a clear and unobstructed view of the animals. A memorable example was the up-close encounter with a lion—the glass created a striking sense of proximity that left a lasting impression.

The zoo is thoughtfully designed to provide an enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. Facilities like spotless sinks with soap are conveniently located near animal enclosures. Plenty of green spaces and rest areas make it easy to relax, while drink vending machines are available throughout the park to help visitors stay refreshed. Additionally, the zoo’s layout—built along a mountainside—features well-planned paths that allow for a gradual ascent, minimizing fatigue and enhancing the overall visit.

As night falls and the temperature cools to a comfortable 21°C (70°F), the park transforms into a breathtaking visual spectacle. The entire museum area lights up, immersing visitors in a magical atmosphere. Every palm tree, bridge, walkway, and flower bed glows in vibrant shades of pink, blue, purple, and green, creating an enchanting scene.

Giant washi paper animals—like pandas, swans, and flamingos—glow majestically, adding a poetic touch to the setting. Large swings adorned with thousands of colorful lights provide an immersive, playful experience that delights both kids and adults.

Further down, a lively lottery kicks off the evening festivities, followed by musical performances and dazzling laser shows synchronized with sound and lighting effects. The grand finale is a firework display that was “certainly not very big” but which perfectly concluded an unforgettable day.

Otherwise, the site also offers fishing activities and rowboat rentals, further enriching the leisure options. So, no matter what time of year you visit, the Okinawa Zoo and Museum is a top destination for families looking for a fun and fulfilling day out.

Nevertheless, for an immersive and unique experience, I recommend visiting this zoo during a special event, such as the Christmas festivities or others. Outside of these periods, the visit might feel similar to that of other zoos in your area, which would be a pity. If you are on vacation in Okinawa, don’t miss the opportunity to discover this place when it lights up after dark. The combination of a daytime visit to the zoo, the interactive museum experience, and the nighttime illumination show creates an unforgettable experience.
